Hey, I’m all for green and not fucking up the environment and fixing things and everything. Don’t get me wrong. I love it. And actually, this is one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a while. It all seems logical and smart and if it really works then I’m all for it. The “until infinity” part of it all kind of scares me as does this prospect of what happens if we ever stop:
Bring the geo-engineering process to a halt, and those sun-warmed carbon sinks spit the carbon dioxide right back into the atmosphere. The rebound warming, to temperatures that would have been reached without the geo-engineering, would be 10 to 20 times the pace of today’s global warming. The rapid warming, up to 7 degrees Fahrenheit per decade, would wreak havoc on the planet and threaten civilization.
Yikes.
But I applaud the researchers with a serious ovation. This is the type of research that needs to be going on: cost effective (since no one seems to be willing to pay a lot of money to save the Earth) ways to restore and protect our environment. Bravo.
