Okay, I know I promised I’d lay off the Transformers but I’ve been watching some of the old cartoons from back in the 80’s and it struck how much of a Cold War cartoon Transformers was. Besides the obvious fight between the forces of good and evil, the cartoon is steeped in mantras of the time. Decepticons stealing the Earth’s resources, power battles in the Decepticon command, etc, etc. It’s so obvious now but I had no idea back in the day, obviously. It’s the same with a lot of children’s cartoons. The old Warner Bros cartoons in the World Wars were incredibly political. So I guess this isn’t new news, but it’s just interesting to look back at these things and see how much we missed as children.
