iPhone No Longer AT&T’s Bitch

Attention denizens: the iPhone has been unlocked and can now be used on networks such as T-Mobile and many foreign networks though damn it to hell I still think it doesn’t work on Verizon.

Bastards.

But anyway, the phone has been hacked or to make it seem less dangerous, unlocked. Big news which means one of two things - Apple opens up the iPhone to other networks soon than it was expecting (if it was even expecting to do so) thus kind of fucking AT&T (’cause their network’s garbage anyway) or Apple quickly mounting large scale security revamps to prevent the unlock software from working. Either way, pretty big time.

Now I Should Definitely Buy an iPhone

Now that Apple has basically open up this whole iPhone universe to the general public, a lot of new user created applications, but this one right here is probably what would put me over the edge if I was considering buying an iPhone (despite the fact that all the commenters on Engadget don’t seem to like it).

That’s 9,000 an hour!

That’s 150 a minute! That’s 2.5 per second! That’s 270,000 iPhones sold in the first 30 hours!

And that, my friends, is freaking amazing. This shows the sheer power of brand. Sure, the iPhone is innovative technology, but that’s only half of its selling point (maybe only a fourth). The real reason it sells like proverbial hot cakes is the brand. It’s Apple. It’s Jobs. It’s Justin Lorts (ugh).

Also in the Times, I found an article that linked me over to this site, which details the security holes in the new iPhone. I (along with many others) thought there would be problems with the new iPhone, but I actually thought their security would be pretty tight given Apple’s good history with security (partially because no one makes viruses for Macs). Apparently, however, one can hack into an iPhone and take complete control of the phone. Yikes. Along with that problem, which I’m sure they’ll fix, I’ve heard rumors that Apple is going to release a version of the iPhone in October that can sync with exchange servers (complete hearsay - or perhaps heresy) . I knew people shouldn’t but it right off the shelf.

Time Well Spent

So, you know how I reported (ha, right, reported) on the fact that the iPhone was going for about a 400 dollar premium on Friday/Saturday? Well, now a lot of people must feel stupid for entirely different reasons. If you look on eBay now, no one is bidding on the phones and the starting/buy it now prices have all gone down. Why? Because you could’ve walked into a store on Saturday and walked out with a phone. Regular price. So this means that there were people standing online thinking, I’m gonna get 3-400 bucks out of this, and are now stuck with an extra iPhone. And then there’s the people who spent a g or more on the phone thinking “Ha! Damn the man and his lines!” Now you can get bundles where you get two iPhones on eBay. Don’t know what that does for you, but you go ahead, guy.

So a lesson to all you in the internetosphere: get off eBay and just go the next day.
